Dear Friends
KOI_600600_72

Lorenzo Feliciati‘s new oeuvre, KOI, is now available across the web and in the real world as CD Digipack, Single Vinyl (180gms) and multiple download formats.

from the press release:

“A concept album based on the life of the renowned river carp fish, Koi features former Japan drummer Steve Jansen and current King Crimson drummer Pat Mastelotto along with pianist Alessandro Gwis, trumpeter Angelo Olivieri, saxophonist Nicola Alesini and a horn section consisting of trombonist Stan Adams, bass trombonist Pierluigi Bastioli and baritone saxophonist Duilio Ingrosso. A suite-like offering that intersperses mesmerizing ambient interludes with full-blown prog-rock type anthems, Koi brilliantly showcases Feliciati’s composerly vision while highlighting his considerable chops on fretted and fretless electric basses.

Traditional Chinese folktales tell the story of Koi fish that swam up the Yellow River, and though taunted by demons, would not relent in their quest to jump over waterfalls; the gods noticed and celebrated their perseverance and endurance by transforming them into golden dragons, a symbol of strength and power. The Japanese recognized these fish not just for their beauty but for their ability to induce otherworldly states of perception in the observer. These altered states of perception ultimately lead to the attraction of high energy, which manifests itself in the form of prosperity of all kinds in our lives.

The musical journey of Koi begins with the spacious, echo-laden piano soundscape “Kohaku” and is followed by the hard-hitting “New House,” a Feliciati composition with Steve Jansen on drums and Alessandro Gwis on keyboards, that is brimming with kinetic momentum and based on a repetitive riff augmented by punchy horns. Lorenzo’s fretless bass melody is doubled here by muted trumpet while baritone sax deepens the groove. The icy and hypnotic interlude “Kumonryu” is followed by the moody, slow-grooving requiem “Oxbow.”

Following another ambient interlude, “Black Kumonryu” Feliciati is reunited with his Naked Truth band mate Mastelotto, who provides the rhythmic pulse on “Noir Alley Verdigris“, a potent number which falls somewhere between King Crimson and Weather Report.”Ogon” provides a breath before Feliciati and crew launch into the dynamic, odd-metered “Narada“, featuring a strong 7/8 groove by Jansen, nearly a dance beat, where distorted bass and horn section mesh to unison.

Feliciati turns in his most expressive fretless playing on “Margata“, a homage to Jaco Pastorius; following another mesmerizing interlude in “Kuchibeni,” Feliciati unleashes his fuzz bass chops on the powerhouse “Fish Bowl“, which incorporates trombones and bass in a low-end unison motif before yielding to a throbbing vamp. This piece originally started as a Frank Zappa-influenced bass/horn section unison riff, but morphed during the final arrangement into something quite different altogether – Feliciati’s bass line moving around Steve Jansen’s drums and electronics giving the impression that it is Jansen moving around Feliciati.

The collection closes with the title track “Koi“, which travels from minimalist intro to cinematic crescendo – the Koi has now become a Golden Dragon.”

Enjoy!

Dear Friends

TWINSCAPES_600600_72dpi

2014 has started swiftly, and we would like to take the opportunity to offer you all a peek at the releases we have prepared for this year. This year’s release schedule will be very intense and will feature two releases per monthly cycle

End of February/Early March:

We start with TWINSCAPES (RNR037 and RNR037LP) ,  an album imagined and moulded by Colin Edwin and Lorenzo Feliciati  after an impromptu gig in London in Spring 2013.  The two master bass-players called upon trumpeter Nils Petter Molvaer, saxophonist David Jackson of Van Der Graaf Generator, percussionist Andi Pupato of Ronin and Roberto Gualdi, drummer of Italian Prog Rock legends PFM. TWINSCAPES was mixed by none other than Bill Laswell in Orange Studios, NJ. Official release date for the album is March 7th.

The album can now be ordered here NOW from the RareNoiseStore as CD Digipack, Single LP 180gms (shipping from around Feb 25th, e.g. a roughly week from release date), .mp3, .flac and 24bit/96Khz HD .flac digital. It will be available on Amazon, Itunes, Emusic, Spotify and all usual retailers (physical and digital) as well as shops ordering from our distributors (Cargo UK, Cargo Germany, Darla)

FreeNelsonMandoomJazz SaxophoneGiganticus

Concurrently the double EP by Free Nelson Mandoomjazz is being released (The Shape Of DoomJazz to come / Saxophone Giganticus – RNR039 and RNR039LP). The three Scots, Rebecca Sneddon on alto sax, Colin Stewart on bass and Paul Archibald on drums were discovered by Eraldo Bernocchi mid 2013 – once signed they headed over to Gorbal Studios in Glasgow in September 2013 where they re-recorded their two first EPs and a new full length album (The Awakening of The City) due out in 2015. The Double EP and the next full length album were mixed by Eraldo Bernocchi. Official release date for the album is March 7th

End Of March /Early April:

The second release cycle will see two magnificent recordings being concurrently released, both with an official release date of April 7th (pre-orders will start March 4th)

SONY DSC

We will start with ELEC3CITIES (RNR038 and RNR038LP), the new album by Italian piano trio CHAT NOIR (Michele Cavallari on piano, multiple keyboards, analog synthesizers and effects, Luca Fogagnolo on electric bass, upright bass, guitars and effects and Giuliano Ferrari on drums and effects).

By organically and masterfully blending elements of Electronica, both Ambient and Concrete Music with structures arising out of chamber music and jazz, this innovative has come up with a wholly unique sound on Elec3Cities that may establish a daring new direction for the format. The delicate balance of electronic experimentalism and acoustic piano jazz has been evolving gradually from the group’s initial release in 2006, Adoration, and continued on 2007’s Decoupage through 2008’s Difficult to See You and 2011’s acclaimed Weather Forecasting Stone. But the three Italian musicians take it to a wholly new level on Elec3Cities, their most overtly experimental outing to date and debut for the London-based RareNoise label.

Concurrently RareNoise will be releasing PLYMOUTH , a three part improvised psychedelic suite  Jamie Saft (piano, organs), Joe Morris (guitars), Gerald Cleaver (drums), Chris Lightcap (electric bass), Mary Halvorson (guitars). Recorded  in Jamie Saft’s Potterville studios, this record presents itself as an entrancing, psychedelic organic voyage. It establishes psychedelia as one of the columns of contemporary free music, and is both mind blowing and incredibly subtle.

The two releases slated for late May/early June are:

a. INDIGO MIST (RNR043 and RNR043LP), a collaboration between the Cuong Vu Trio and electroacoustic composer Prof Richard Karpen. This is an incredible release – a study in the organic interaction of man and machine, musicians and patches. The trio of Roy Powell, Jacob Young and Jarle Vespestad have worked hard on a new incredible release to follow on the self-titled debut album (RNR026) released in 2012 on RareNoiseRecords. The result is masterful ROCK’N’ROLL album. More News soon

End of September/Early October

2015
